You don’t need a different outfit for every day, dressy clothes for dinner or a suitcase filled with “just in case” items.

For most 7- to 10-day family vacations, concentrate on comfortable clothes that can be mixed, matched and worn more than once. Many hotels offer laundry service, and laundromats are available in most major tourism destinations.

Quick-drying fabrics are especially helpful because between the humidity, rain, pools, beaches, rafting and waterfalls, something is almost always wet.

Every traveler, including babies and children, needs a valid passport to enter Costa Rica.

What Money Should You Bring to Costa Rica?

Costa Rica’s official currency is the Costa Rican colón, but U.S. dollars are widely accepted in tourism areas. Major credit cards are also accepted throughout much of the country.

There’s usually no reason to arrive carrying large amounts of cash.

We recommend having some smaller bills available for tips, small purchases and places where paying by card may be inconvenient.

Costa Rica is tropical, but don’t assume your entire vacation will be hot.

Temperature and weather can change considerably depending on where you’re traveling.

At the beach in Guanacaste, your family may be wearing shorts and swimsuits all day. In Monteverde, you may want long pants and a light jacket. La Fortuna can be hot and humid but also receives sudden rain showers.

The best strategy is lightweight layers.

Avoid packing too much heavy cotton if you’re visiting humid areas. It absorbs moisture and can take much longer to dry.

This sounds excessive until you’ve spent a day in Costa Rica with children.

A swimsuit worn in the morning may still be wet when everyone wants to swim again that afternoon.

Two swimsuits per child can make life much easier.

We also highly recommend UV-protective rash guards or swim shirts. They’re great for beach days, pools, rafting and boat trips and reduce how much exposed skin you need to continually cover with sunscreen.

Costa Rica for Kids Tip

Put at least one swimsuit for every family member in your carry-on luggage.

If your checked luggage is delayed (or you arrive at your hotel before your room is ready), nobody has to miss the pool.

This is one of the questions families ask us most often.

For a typical Costa Rica family vacation, most children do not need heavy hiking boots.

A good pair of comfortable athletic or walking shoes will work for many family hikes, hanging bridges and nature activities.

We recommend bringing:

Before purchasing special shoes, check the requirements for the tours on your itinerary. Some adventure operators require closed-toe shoes while others allow secure sport sandals.

Even during Costa Rica’s traditionally drier months, tropical showers can happen.

And one of the most important things to understand about Costa Rica weather is that there isn’t one weather pattern for the entire country.

Costa Rica has numerous microclimates. The weather in Guanacaste can be completely different from the weather in La Fortuna, Monteverde or Puerto Viejo on the very same day.

Instead of packing solely according to the month you’re traveling, think about where you’re traveling.

A lightweight rain jacket or poncho for each family member is usually enough.

Look for something that:

Heavy raincoats usually aren’t necessary and can feel uncomfortable in warm, humid weather.

Guanacaste

Expect warmer temperatures and generally drier conditions than many other parts of Costa Rica, particularly during the Pacific dry season.

Tropical forecasts can show rain every day even when much of the day is perfectly suitable for activities. Weather can also vary dramatically within a relatively short distance.

A rash guard can be one of the best things you pack for children because it provides reliable coverage without having to continually chase kids around with sunscreen.

Mosquitoes and other insects are part of traveling in the tropics, although how many you encounter varies greatly by location, season and even time of day.

Pack an insect repellent that your family has already used successfully at home.

You can purchase diapers, wipes and many common baby products in Costa Rica, especially in larger towns. However, if your child requires a particular brand, formula, medication or specialty food, bring enough from home rather than assuming you’ll find the exact product here.

Costa Rica has supermarkets, convenience stores and plenty of opportunities to pick up snacks along the way, so you don’t need to bring food for your entire vacation.

But familiar snacks can be lifesavers during:

Lets Talk – Dry Season (December – April) 

If you are looking to escape cold winter weather in the US or Europe, you aren’t alone. Many birds migrate annually to Costa Rica for exactly the same reason. Up to 800 species of birds have been sighted in Costa Rica during the dry season. So if you are into bird watching or just love nature and would be wowed by the sight of one of the most beautiful birds in the world – the Resplendent Quetzal with its red breast and trailing plumage – January through March is an excellent time to visit Costa Rica.

This is also the very best time to plan a self-drive vacation, especially if you want to visit some of the more remote areas of Costa Rica. It is easier to drive back roads and to spot animals in the dry season when trees are flowering amidst the backdrop of golden hillsides, which are devoid of the lush growth seen in the rainy season. Hiking is easier because trails are dry, and it sure makes packing your shoes less messy when you pack up to head home. Plus, all hotels and resorts are open and offering their full range of services and activities.

Beginning in December, festivals and parades abound throughout the county, and Costa Rica’s bullring antics and wackiness get into full swing. One of the two annual humpback whale migrations happens in late January and early February when they come from the north to breed and give birth. You can see them blowing, slapping the surface with their pectoral fins, breaching or showing their enormous flute when they dive deep to feed. Whales just generate excitement!

If you plan to visit Costa Rica over the Christmas, New Year or Easter holidays, you will want to book your space well in advance – even one to two years in advance. Hotel space is limited, particularly at the beach, and Costa Ricans love their beaches as much as tourists do and flock to them during the holidays. But, you can’t ask for better weather that you get in Costa Rica than Christmas or Spring Break if you are looking for a sunny getaway.

Lets Talk – Rainy Season (May – November) 

After five months with rarely even a drop of rain, the “Ticos” and countryside are more than ready to drink in some moisture. The mountainsides come alive with the rain, changing from dull earth to hills alive with lush, green flora. Transition months of May and November are something to celebrate by the locals. And if you are wondering about where to travel during hurricane season, Costa Rica is a great choice, because it is only 10 degrees from the equator, well outside the normal hurricane belt.

This is the very best time to go scuba diving or snorkeling in the Pacific Northwest. The winds that howl from January to March are replaced by very light rains in May that flatten the seas giving mariners calm, warm water. Warm water in the Pacific replace the cold water currents found December through March, so you don’t need a wetsuit to snorkel. And it is an easy ride to get to the best spots for sunset cruises, snorkeling, fishing or diving without a lot of swells and wave action rocking on the boat, which is important if you don’t have good sea legs. And in June and July mating turtles dot the surface, so the females will soon be heading in to nest and lay hundreds of eggs along the coastal beaches.

The best months to beat the crowds, enjoy great weather and snap up great deals are May and August. And, bonus, August is the optimum time to see turtles nesting and the time when the humpback whales migrate from the Antarctic.

Many resorts in the Osa Peninsula close to remodel from September thru November due to heavy rains that fill rivers causing runoff to bleed into the ocean making activities like whale watching, scuba diving and snorkeling unavailable. But Guanacaste’s Northwest coast has no rivers draining into their ocean water. So it is important to know where the rivers are and where they drain when traveling in the rainy season.

But there is really great news if you know where to stay when you visit in September and October! Although these are the rainiest months along the Pacific beaches and in the Central Valley near the nation’s capital, it is the very best time to visit the southern Caribbean beaches and Northern region near Arenal Volcano. There is little rain, the temperature is divine, and you can find some killer bargains and specials!
