Families love this Costa Rica for Kids Wildlife Safari Float & Tortilla Making tour! Nature lovers of all ages will love this tour, so even families with the littlest kids and grandparents can enjoy this tour together. A short 25-minute drive from Fortuna, is the Peñas Blancas river, a very slow-flowing river making it an easy-paced and relaxing float.

The Peñas Blancas is home to sloths and two species of monkeys. Along with howler and white-faced capuchin monkeys, you might spot iguanas, Jesus Christ lizards that walk on water, crocodiles and various species of birds. Your guide will share information about the community, the locals who live there and impart knowledge about the flora and fauna along the Peñas Blancas.

The float down the Peñas Blancas lasts around two hours. The quiet, tranquil setting allows you to really soak in the sights and sounds of Costa Rica’s tropical rainforest. Your guide will take care of the paddling, so all you have to do is kick back, enjoy the beauty of your surroundings and watch for wildlife.

After the float trip, you will stop at one of the river area farms where you will refresh yourself while visiting with a local family. Now it’s time for some hands on fun the entire family will love. Once you arrive at Doña Mara’s home you will be greeted with a fresh tropical drink made with local pineapple, oranges and coconut water.

While lunch is being prepared, you and your family will learn to make tortillas using freshly ground corn “masa.” You will learn how to form the masa into circles, and once they are prepared they will be cooked inside Doña Mara’s home on her wood-fired stove.

You and your family are welcome to practice your Spanish during your visit. Later at the “rancho” you will share lunch with the family. You will be served a hot Costa Rican lunch, known as a “casado” – a marriage of delicious typical foods, including the tortillas you helped to make!
