Costa Rica weather in June means sunny mornings, an afternoon downpour, and greener scenery than in any other month you could pick. June opens the green season, our local name for the rainy months, and it is one of the most misunderstood times to travel here with kids.

Families hear “rainy season” and picture a week under an umbrella. What they actually get is a country that wakes up dry, gives them five good hours outside, and then sends everyone to the pool while the clouds do their thing.

In June, Costa Rica is warm, humid, and wet in the afternoons. Coastal highs reach about 86 to 90°F (30 to 32°C), the Central Valley tops out near 79°F (26°C), and Monteverde stays cooler at 70 to 75°F (21 to 24°C). Mornings are usually dry. Rain typically starts after 2 p.m. and lasts one to three hours.

That rhythm is not a travel-blog cliché. According to the Instituto Meteorológico Nacional (IMN), the Pacific rainy season runs from May through October, and the rain falls mostly in the afternoon and early evening; the IMN climate atlas has the regional detail. Humidity is what families underestimate: kids sweat more, drink more, and tire earlier than at home. Plan for that and June is comfortable.

Yes, for most families, with one honest condition: afternoons are not for the beach. In exchange, June gives you smaller crowds, easier bookings, green-season rates at many hotels, waterfalls at full volume, and wildlife that is active because the forest is wet. For families, that is usually a good trade.

Here is the other side. Some Pacific beaches have stronger surf in June, trails get muddy, drives take longer, and the Caribbean coast sits in one of its wetter windows. We do not promise perfect weather. We promise a plan that still works when it rains.

The biggest fear we hear about Costa Rica in June is “too rainy,” and the honest answer is: not the way you are imagining. On the Pacific side and in the mountains, June is not a grey drizzle that lasts all day. It is a tropical schedule: bright morning, dramatic afternoon storm, calm evening.

A typical day starts under blue sky by 7:30 a.m. and runs outdoors until noon. Between 2 and 4 p.m. the rain comes down hard, loud enough that the kids run to the window. Then it eases, the frogs start, and the evening is cool. Multi-day systems do happen, but the IMN names September and October as the wettest Pacific months. June is the gentle opening, not the peak.

Costa Rica weather in June changes with the mountains that split the country into distinct climates. Guanacaste is the driest and hottest region, the Central Valley is mild with reliable afternoon showers, La Fortuna and Monteverde are wetter and cooler, and the Caribbean coast sits in a rainy window of its own.

The Caribbean runs on a nearly reversed calendar. The IMN describes no defined dry season there, with the driest windows in February to March and September to October, and a wet period from May to August that peaks in July.

June is quieter and slightly greener; July often brings a short dry spell on the Pacific side but also the biggest crowds of the green season. If your dates are flexible, June wins on space and value. If you need the driest possible Pacific beach week within summer break, early July has a slight edge.

The IMN describes a relative dip in rainfall during July and August on the Pacific slope, known locally as the veranillo. It is a dip, not a switch, and on the Caribbean July is the wettest month of its wet period. The bigger difference is people, since North American school holidays and Costa Rica’s midyear break both land in July. Therefore:

•             If you want elbow room and easier bookings, choose June.
•             If you want the driest Pacific beach days in summer, choose July.
•             If Tortuguero’s turtles are the priority, choose July or later, when green turtle nesting officially begins.

The best June activities work with the daily pattern: something active in the morning, something wet-friendly in the afternoon. Hot springs, ziplines, wildlife sanctuaries, and Guanacaste beaches all fit that shape.

Pack for warm, wet, and humid: quick-dry clothing, a light rain jacket per person, closed shoes that can get muddy, sandals for the pool, and a dry bag for phones and snacks.
